Santorini is a Greek island located in the southeast part of the Aegean sea. It belongs to the Cyclades island complex, like other popular Greek islands such as Mykonos, Paros, and Ios. It lies 220 km away from Athens (Rafina) which means it takes 5 to 8 hours to reach it by ferry from Athens. As for the distance from the nearby islands, Santorini is located 120 km away from Mykonos, 80 km away from Paros, and 40 km away from Ios.
We recommend staying in Santorini for 4 to 6 days, especially if you're planning to do activities like wine tours, cruises, and sightseeing. For those planning their honeymoon in Santorini, one week is the perfect amount of time for you to relax and enjoy the island with your significant other.
The temperatures in Santorini hover between 24 °C and 29 °C in the summer and can climb up to 35 °C at midday. However, thanks to the Meltemi winds that blown in the Aegean, Santorini doesn't get steaming hot.
The truth is that Santorini is one of the most expensive islands in Greece. Caldera hotels in Santorini are expensive, but they're totally worth it. The most expensive season in Santorini is the summer, so if you want to save some money, you best bet is to opt for the shoulder season (mid/early fall or mid/late spring).
Santorini is a safe island, but you should always take precautions. For example, you should keep in mind that there is a risk of accidents due to the island’s rocky landscape, so you should stay away from the cliffs. You should also keep an eye on your belongings, especially when you are in crowded places like Oia and Fira. Another risk in Santorini is car accidents, so you should always keep your mind on the road and never drive drunk.
Most shops in Santorini operate seasonally, meaning they are open only during the touristic season, from April to October. During this period, the shops are open every day, from 10 am to 10 pm or until midnight.
Some of the best things to do in Santorini are to watch the sunset in Oia, explore the volcano, go on a boat tour around Santorini, visit the museums, swim in the hot springs, partake in a wine tasting session, and hike from Fira to Oia.
Unlike the neighbouring Mykonos, which is famous for its wild party scene, Santorini is not a party island. However, you can still find many bars, cocktail bars, and night clubs in Fira. What's more, many beach parties take place at the island's beaches throughout the summer.
