Sailing to Kimolos

Kimolos is part of the Cyclades island complex, the most popular cluster of islands in Greece! The Cyclades is one of the best destinations for island-hopping, as the islands are close to each other and ferry schedules are frequent. Kimolos, in particular, can easily be part of an island-hopping that includes nearby islands like Milos, Sifnos, Serifos, Paros, and Naxos.

But, although the Cyclades is a go-to for island-hopping, it is not the best option for sailing/yachting because of the Meltemi winds. These strong northern winds batter the Aegean in July and August, making sailing challenging and even dangerous for inexperienced sailors. If you want to go sailing in the Cyclades, we suggest that you opt for June or September! Read also: Sailing in Greece

How to plan your holiday to Kimolos: Frequently Asked Questions

Here’s what you need to know about planning your holiday to Kimolos. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to contact us!

It depends! If Kimolos is part of your island-hopping trip through the Cyclades, then we suggest that you stay on the island for at least three days. But, if Kimolos is your main holiday destination, staying for 5-7 days will let you unwind and explore the island at your own pace.
Kimolos doesn’t get overcrowded, even during the heights of summer. This means that, unlike other Cycladic islands, it is not packed with tourists in July and August. If you want to combine your visit to Kimolos with trips to other islands, like Milos and Paros, we suggest that you avoid peak season and opt for the less-crowded shoulder season.
Kimolos island is too big to be explored on foot, so using a car is the best way to get everywhere and see everything. You can find many car rental companies throughout the island, but most of them are concentrated at the port.
Some of the things you should do on your holiday to Kimolos are to take a stroll through Chorio, the island’s capital, go for a swim at the unspoiled beaches, visit the Archaeological and the Folklore Museum, go on a boat trip to the exotic Polyaigos islet, visit Gerakia sea cave, introduce yourself to the local gastronomy, and go hiking following the hiking routes of Kimolos.
No, Kimolos doesn’t have an airport. The closest airport to Kimolos is the airport of Milos, so you can first get from Athens to Milos by air and then get from Milos to Kimolos by ferry.
You can get to Kimolos by ferry from Athens or other islands of the Cyclades, like Milos, Santorini, Sifnos, and Folegandros.

Chorio, the capital of Kimolos

Chorio, which means village in Greek, is the picturesque capital of the island. Boasting traditional Cycladic architecture (see whitewashed houses and colorful windows) with Venetian influences, Chorio is a perfect marriage of elegance and history. A stroll through its scenic quarters is a photographer’s dream! Archways, cute balconies embellished with colorful flowers, dazzling white cubic houses, tiny shops, traditional cafes… There’s a lot to love about the postcard-perfect Chorio!

Things to do in Kimolos

At the center of Chorio lies the Medieval Kastro (Castle), an architectural reminder from the Venetian occupation. The Castro district consists of two main quarters Mesa Kastro and Exo Kastro, the first of which was built in the 13th century and the second in the 17th century. The moment you pass the gate of the castle, you will feel transferred back in time! Other places worth visiting in Chorio are Panagia Odigitria church, the Folklore Museum, and Plateia tou Sxoleiou (School’s Square). Read also: The best things to do in Greece

Polyaigos, which means ‘many goats’ in Greek, took its name from its only inhabitants -goats. Standing out for its exotic ambiance, unspoiled natural beauty, and fantastic beaches, Polyaigos will instantly make you feel teleported to the Caribbean!
